I didn’t begin After Hours with a story in mind. I simply wanted to practice form and value—to explore how light, shadow, and color could give ordinary shapes more presence. Somewhere along the way, these oranges became something else entirely.

Their deep, burnt citrus tones, soft curves, flashes of turquoise and pink, and loose floral details gave the piece an unexpected sultriness. There’s something warm and slightly indulgent about it, almost like fruit sitting on a table long after dinner, when the room has gone quiet and the colors seem richer.

This piece reminded me that sometimes I don’t need to know what a painting is going to become. I can start with something technical and let instinct take over. After Hours is what happened when a simple study of form and value turned into mood.
